*USCSA EMBRACES FREESTYLE*
As a result of the recent annual Board of Directors meeting, organization welcomes Skiercross, Halfpipe, and Slopestyle in the 2007 – 2008 season
The last decade in skiing has been marked by the growth and popularity of the freestyle discipline. With the International Olympic Committee’s decision to recognize skiercross as an event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, comes the need to support all aspects of freestyle skiing at the collegiate level.
The United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) held its annual Board of Directors meeting on June 1 and 2, 2007 in Bloomington, Minnesota. It was at this meeting that overwhelming support for Freestyle Competitions was embraced through a full-board vote to be the first collegiate ski association to hold Skiercross, Halfpipe, and Slopestyle events. Events throughout the United States will culminate in an exhibition at the 30^th Annual Collegiate National Championships in March of 2008 at Sunday River Resort in Maine.
Coaches, captains, and athletes are encouraged to contact their Conference Coordinator for more information on participating and team development at their university. Contact details can be found at the USCSA website at: www.uscsa.com.
The USCSA is the sports federation for collegiate team ski racing and snowboarding in America. USCSA believes that student-athletes of all levels and abilities should have access to quality and exciting venues of competitions. In excess of 150 colleges from coast to coast, field some 4,500 men and women in alpine, cross country, and snowboarding in over 200 race events annually. Competition takes place across three progressive tiers: conference qualifiers determine the participants at the five USCSA Regional Championships, and the Regionals are the last step on the road to the annual championships, the showcase event in college ski and snowboard competition. Team performance is emphasized within the USCSA, a departure form the typical individual or world cup scoring format in skiing. Former USCSA athletes agree that it is this team orientation that has helped to foster a team approach in all aspects of their lives and careers.
